Only 150 years ago, many parts of Mattenwere still a forest of fruit trees. TheBaumgarten fountain made from RinggenbergAlpine limestone was a giftfrom master builder Fritz Kübli. The municipalityhad awarded his constructionfirm the contract to build the first stagesof the modern sewage system.

The water from the Baumgarten fountaindoes not flow into the drainagesystem but seeps into the ground. Thismeans that clean water is not added todirty water and the sewer is preventedfrom being overloaded.

«Did you know? Switzerland’spublic and private sewer systemis 80,000 km long. The networkis thus one of the largest buildingstructures in the country.»
