Fountain «MATTENKREUZ»

The name, in English Matten Cross, refers to the crossroads or the crucifixthat stood above the stone grotto inCatholic times. The later widening ofthe road required the fountain to berelocated into the slope. The waterof the Mattenkreuz fountain flowsfrom its own spring. In the 15th century, the Interlaken Monastery beganconstruction of well chambers onland of the neighbouring village ofWilderswil, in which the spring watercould be stored. The fountains arestill fed by a supply line that is independentof the public water supply. The Fountain Trail follows the routeof the supply line.
